Challenges of Exterior Painting

Exterior painting presents unique challenges compared to interior painting or other projects. The exterior of a house can be made of different substrates such as wood, stucco, or metal. The condition of these substrates can vary greatly depending on exposure to weather and environmental factors. Common issues include dry rot, wet rot, termite damage, cracking stucco, old peeling paint, mildew & mold, and rusting metals. Proper substrate preparation is crucial to achieve a brilliant and long-lasting exterior paint finish.

Expert Painting Preparation

Our meticulous preparation work is a major strength of our exterior painting service. We start by assessing the condition of your home’s exterior. This may involve repairing wood rot, removing and retexturing stucco, addressing old peeling paint, or tackling rust issues on metal surfaces. Santa Barbara’s salty ocean air and high humidity levels contribute to wood damage, rust, and paint deterioration, making thorough preparation essential for a lasting exterior paint job.

Comprehensive Exterior Painting Process

Our exterior painting services include:

Wood Surfaces: We meticulously scrape and sand to remove loose and flaking materials and damaged wood surfaces. If the surfaces can be repaired, we use wood repair putties, epoxies, and bonding agents. After, all raw wood materials are primed (as well as patches). After transitional gaps will be caulked.
Stucco Surfaces: Stucco/plaster surfaces are scraped to remove existing loose and flaking materials. Where stucco/plaster has been removed, stucco glue is applied followed by the new stucco patching application (doing our best to match the surrounding texture). Cracks larger than the width of a credit card are cored-out creating a “V” channel. By creating this channel, we allow the same repair process to be completed on the crack areas. All new stucco surfaces will be primed entirely following the repair process.
Metal Surfaces: Metal surfaces are wire brushed, sanded, and sometimes grinded in order to remove existing rusted surfaces and to reach solid material. After, a red-oxide primer is either applied to the entire surface or to the locations where rust had previously existed. After the primer has been applied, a direct-to-metal paint will be applied specifically designed for metal surfaces.

Each exterior painting project is a unique, custom job. Our preparation process accounts for over half of the total hours on most exterior repainting projects, ensuring a high-quality finish that stands the test of time.

Justin founded the business and brings a rich background of professional and personal experiences to the business.

Justin graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 2003 with dual degrees in Construction Management and Business Management. His career in construction began in San Diego, where he worked as a Project Engineer, completing numerous school renovations and a new elementary school project for the Ramona Unified School District.

After a two-year stint teaching English in Japan, Justin moved to San Francisco in 2006. He continued his career in construction, working on significant projects like the Hyatt Burlingame SFO renovation, the Marriott Union Square renovation, a parking structure for the city of Vallejo, and a 23-story residential high-rise in Hollywood.

Justin married Michele in 2008 and is a proud father to Maya, Ava, and Judah. Inspired by his experiences in Japan, he founded the business in 2013, focused on exceptional customer service.

Martin grew up in Oxnard and graduated from Port Hueneme High School in 2004. Throughout his childhood and high school, he spent summers helping his father with his client’s construction projects. This is where his love for construction started! Being part of projects from start to finish made him proud of their accomplishments.

After working with his father, he spent the next 12 years in the finish carpentry trade, mostly building custom cabinets. He learned and performed the staining and painting applications for high-end cabinetry. One of his favorite aspects of construction is assisting customers during the process, helping them on a more personal level.

When not working, he enjoys spending time with his family, playing volleyball and soccer, walking on the beach, and playing drums.
